Good morning, Forsyth County.
There was a show I watched growing up that had a line I still think about every summer: “Summer rains, you can never predict them.”
That quote has been echoing in my head this week every time I open the weather app. Thunderstorms. Thunderstorms. Thunderstorms. Every single day. But anyone who has lived through a Georgia summer knows what that really means. It might storm at 2:17 PM for exactly nine minutes. It might rain on one side of 400 while the other side stays bone dry. It might look like the sky is about to fall apart, then the sun comes back out like nothing happened.
At some point, the forecast stops feeling like a forecast and starts feeling like the weatherman shrugging and saying, “I don’t know. Maybe?”
So this week, consider the forecast more of a suggestion than a promise. Luckily, there is still plenty happening around Forsyth County between the pop-up storms, humid afternoons, and suspiciously vague thunderstorm icons.

Adventure travel built for families
Intrepid Travel has just launched its new Premium Family range — eight new trips across Costa Rica, Sri Lanka, India, Borneo, Vietnam, Morocco, Thailand and Egypt. Small groups of three to five families. Intrepid's most experienced local guides. Immersive, kid-focused activities and elevated stays, with all the logistics handled for you. Watch baby orangutans learn to climb in Borneo. Stargaze at a desert camp in Morocco. Spot leopards on safari in India. These aren't holidays where you watch the world through a window — they're the kind of trips kids remember when they're grown up. Bookings for Intrepid's Family range grew 19% in 2025, and their new Premium tier is their fastest-growing travel style for good reason.
THE DIGEST
Furkids Opens Larger Dog Shelter on Union Hill Road
Furkids opened its new Sutherlin Dog Shelter on Thursday, June 4, at 5235 Union Hill Road in Forsyth County, giving rescue dogs more space while they wait for permanent homes. The 15,000-square-foot shelter can house 135 dogs, doubling the capacity of the organization’s previous dog shelter. During the ribbon cutting, Furkids staff, volunteers and donors welcomed 50 dogs into the new facility with a “spirit tunnel,” cheering for each animal by name. The shelter includes private rooms instead of kennels, indoor and outdoor play areas, grooming stations, meet-and-greet spaces and access to the Big Creek Greenway. Furkids also previewed the nearby Giaquinto Medical Center, which is expected to expand veterinary care for rescue animals later this summer.
Forsyth Central Graduate’s Documentary Explores County’s Past and Future
Recent Forsyth Central High School graduate Will Tims is sharing a student-made documentary that looks at Forsyth County’s history, growth and future. The film, “Forsyth Frontier: A Foundation and Future,” premiered June 7 at the Cumming Library, with a second showing scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, July 25, also at the library. Created in partnership with the local chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, the documentary was developed as part of America’s 250th birthday celebration. Tims interviewed more than 30 people, including local officials, business owners, educators and community members, to explore Forsyth County’s past, present and future. Tims, a recent Forsyth Central film academy student, will continue studying film and writing at Ringling College of Art and Design.
Department of Engineering Tests Smartphone Tool to Improve Curve Safety
Forsyth County’s Department of Engineering is working with Georgia Tech and Kennesaw State University on a smartphone-based tool that could make local roads safer and speed up how advisory speed signs are evaluated. The project focuses on curved roadways, where crash risk can increase and where engineers traditionally use specialized equipment, such as a ball bank indicator, to determine safe advisory speeds.
The new tool would use sensors already built into smartphones to help measure curve conditions and recommend appropriate speeds. Once fully developed, county sign crews could use the app in the field instead of waiting for a manual engineering study, making the process faster and more efficient. Forsyth County has supported the research by providing roadway data and driving selected routes. Officials say the technology could eventually benefit communities across Georgia and beyond.
