Good morning, Forsyth County.

There I was, minding my own business, rolling down Bethelview Road in my truck, still half in Fourth of July mode, when the radio decided to ruin the moment.

Back to school.

Surely not! We just had fireworks, cookouts, and a long weekend that felt like summer was finally hitting its stride. But somehow, here we are. Meet the Teacher is starting to appear on the horizon, school supplies are creeping back toward the front of the store, and kids are about to swear the shoes that fit perfectly last week suddenly do not fit at all.

I’m not sure where the time goes, but it sure does fly by. One minute you’re watching fireworks, and the next you’re trying to remember which folder color each teacher requested.

Mathis Airport Road Adds Gated Home Community

South Forsyth has a new gated neighborhood along Mathis Airport Parkway and Mathis Airport Road. Laurel View, a 78-home community from The JW Collection, includes townhomes, garden homes, and estate homes, with prices starting at $1 million. The townhomes offer about 3,500 square feet of living space, while the single-family homes range from 4,400 to more than 6,000 square feet. Plans for the development also include shared outdoor spaces, including maintained greenspace, a fire pit, and an open-air pavilion for residents. The community adds a mixed-use element as well, with 15,000 square feet of commercial space included on site. According to the developer, 13 homes and eight commercial spaces have already sold. Laurel View is located at 3710 Mathis Airport Parkway.

Old Cumming Police Building Makes Way for Park Space

A longtime city building on Veterans Memorial Boulevard is coming down in Cumming. Crews began demolition work this week at the former Cumming Police Department headquarters and municipal court building. The structure was originally built in 1974 as Cumming City Hall and later became home to the city’s police department and court operations. Both offices moved earlier this year to the new public safety and municipal court building at Cumming City Center, leaving the older property ready for a new use. Once demolition is complete, the city plans to turn the site into a pocket park and rebuild the parking lot. The new layout is also expected to add parking for visitors attending events at the nearby Cumming Fairgrounds.

Cumming Steam Parade Rolls Through Downtown

Downtown Cumming filled with crowds Saturday as the 68th annual Thomas-Mashburn Steam Engine Parade rolled through the city for Independence Day. The parade began at Forsyth Central High School, traveled along Tribble Gap Road, and ended at the Cumming Fairgrounds. Along the route, spectators watched antique steam engines, vintage tractors, classic cars, floats, emergency vehicles, local organizations, and businesses pass through downtown. Children collected candy from parade participants, while a few passing trailers helped cool the crowd by spraying water along the way. The tradition dates back to 1958, when A.G. Glen Thomas drove a 1912 Case steam engine around the courthouse square. More engines joined over time, turning the ride into one of Cumming’s most recognizable Fourth of July traditions.

THANKS!

Thanks for reading today’s Forsyth Flyer.

I really appreciate everyone who takes the time to reply, share a kind word, or pass this along to someone else in Forsyth County. That may seem like a small thing, but it is how this newsletter grows, and it tells me this is actually helping people feel a little more connected to what is happening around here.

That is the whole reason the Flyer exists. Forsyth County moves fast, and it is easy to miss things unless you know exactly where to look. My goal is to make it simpler to keep up without having to spend your morning bouncing between websites, calendars, and Facebook posts.

If you know someone who would enjoy the Forsyth Flyer, send this their way. I would be grateful.

And if you have an event, a story idea, or something happening around town that more people should know about, just reply to this email. I personally read every message. Local businesses interested in reaching Forsyth County readers can reply here as well or email me at [email protected].

Have a great weekend!
