Good morning, Forsyth County.
Yesterday, June 14, was Flag Day, a time to pause and honor one of the most recognizable symbols of our nation: the American flag. Flag Day commemorates June 14, 1777, when the Continental Congress adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of the United States.
The idea of celebrating the flag grew over time, especially through the efforts of teachers, civic leaders, and patriotic organizations who wanted Americans to reflect on what the flag represents. One of the earliest champions of Flag Day was Bernard J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher who encouraged his students to observe the flag’s birthday in the late 1800s. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed June 14 as Flag Day, and in 1949, Congress made it a permanent national observance.
Flag Day is a reminder not only of our country’s history, but also of the values the flag continues to represent: freedom, unity, sacrifice, and hope. As we look back on yesterday’s observance, we are reminded that the flag is more than fabric and color. It is a symbol of the generations who have worked, served, and sacrificed to help shape the United States we know today.

I’m Retiring With $1.5M: Can I Safely Spend $10k/Month?
You’ve saved $1.5 million. Now comes the real test.
Can it produce $10,000 a month, or will that pace drain your portfolio?
Most retirees do not get a clear answer until it is too late.
The issue is not just how much you have. It is whether your portfolio was built to pay you, not just grow.
That difference can determine whether your money lasts decades or starts breaking down early.
Sequence of returns, taxes on withdrawals, healthcare costs, and whether the 4% rule still applies all play a role.
Fiduciary advisors created a breakdown showing what drives sustainable income and why the same $1.5M can produce very different outcomes.
If you have $1M or more invested, do not guess.
THE DIGEST
Forsyth County Advances Road and Sidewalk Design Work
Forsyth County is preparing the next wave of local road and pedestrian improvements after commissioners approved more than $4.5 million for design work tied to SPLOST IX. The package covers 19 infrastructure projects, including 11 roundabouts, seven sidewalk segments and one intersection realignment at Spot Road and West McCoy Circle. Planned roundabout locations include intersections along Hurt Bridge, Wallace Tatum, Shady Grove, Mount Tabor, Martin and other county roads. Sidewalk design work is planned for areas including James Road/Martin Drive, Nichols Drive, Piney Grove Road, Tidwell Road, Christopher Robin Road, Gilbert Road and Heardsville Road. County staff said the projects were divided among multiple consultants to speed up design. Some projects may move faster than others, depending on right-of-way needs, utility work and other construction challenges.
Suspected Algae Bloom Reported Near Cumming
Lake Lanier users are being urged to use caution after a suspected algae bloom was reported in a cove within the Six Mile Embayment area near Cumming. The Lake Lanier Association shared information about the possible bloom as officials continue to monitor conditions. Algae blooms can pose health risks to both people and pets, especially if they come into contact with affected water. Swimmers, boaters and pet owners should avoid areas where the water appears discolored, has a strong or unusual odor, or shows green or blue scum on the surface. Officials say there are limited treatment options once a bloom forms, and blooms often fade naturally as weather and water conditions change. Lake visitors should stay alert and avoid questionable water until conditions improve.

Customers can also schedule eye exams at the location. The shop is carrying Warby Parker’s Summer 2026 styles along with its Sport collection. The store is located at 410 Peachtree Parkway, Suite 148.
CIVIL NEWS
Monday, June 15, is quiet on the posted calendars I checked, but Tuesday is stacked on the Forsyth County government calendar, with five public bodies and six posted meetings or public sessions. The run starts at 5:00 PM with the Cumming Planning Board at Cumming City Hall’s third-floor Council Chambers, a short land-use meeting before the Cumming City Council holds its regular meeting in the same room at 6:00 PM. The Forsyth County Board of Education also begins at 5:00 PM at the Board of Education/Professional Development Center on Dahlonega Highway. Its regular-meeting schedule says the board opens at 5:00 PM, moves into executive session, and returns for the public portion at 6:00 PM. At 6:30 PM, the Forsyth County Planning Commission holds a work session in the county commissioners’ meeting room. County planning schedules note that the public may attend work sessions but may not speak or ask questions. Then at 7:00 PM, the Forsyth County Board of Voter Registrations & Elections meets at 1201 Sawnee Drive to compute and canvass the June 16 General Primary Runoff, a process posted to continue day-to-day until completed. The school board also has a separate BOE budget hearing posted for 7:30 PM that night.
Wednesday has no separate local-government meeting I found in the official calendars, though the elections canvass could continue if unfinished. Thursday brings two county meetings: the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners convenes at 5:00 PM for its regular meeting and public hearings, and the Forsyth County Animal Control Board follows at 6:00 PM for a called meeting at the Freedom Park Administration Building, 2435 Freedom Parkway in Cumming.

THANKS!
That’s it for today’s Forsyth Flyer.
The best local stories are often the ones hiding in plain sight. A new sign going up at The Collection. A road project that changes your morning drive. A lake warning that gets passed around by neighbors before it ever feels like news. That is what makes Forsyth interesting. So much of what matters here starts with someone noticing something small and asking, “What’s going on there?”
So when you spot something around Forsyth County, send it my way. It can be a photo, a quick note, a question about a business, or something you heard that needs checking out. It does not have to be fancy. A lot of good local stories start with a simple tip. And if you know someone who likes keeping up with what is happening around Cumming, Lake Lanier, and the rest of Forsyth County, forward them this issue.
I’ll be back in your inbox on Thursday. Until then, follow Forsyth Flyer on Facebook and Instagram for updates between emails. Have a great week!
