TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Forsyth County.

I hope you didn't have anything planned outside today, it's looking like a soggy one. Whatever happened to those slow, steady rains that would roll in and just hang around for a while? The kind where you'd sit on the porch with a cup of coffee and just listen. Lately it feels like every storm blows through sideways, rattles the windows for 10 minutes, and then disappears. I'm not mad about the rain, we need it. I just wish it would take its time. What I don't need is another freeze. The trees around here are starting to bud and everything is just on the edge of turning green. Spring is close, I can feel it.

Big Creek Greenway section closes for renovation work

Trail users along the Big Creek Greenway will need to find alternate routes after Forsyth County Parks & Recreation temporarily closed the section from Fowler Park north to the Bethelview Trailhead on Wednesday, Feb. 25. The closure, expected to last up to two weeks, allows crews to conduct geotechnical boring — soil testing that ensures the foundation is stable enough for new helical piers and Permatrac materials planned for the trail. "This represents an important investment in the long-term safety, durability and accessibility of one of our most heavily used trail systems," said Parks Director Kirk Franz. Updates will be posted at parks.forsythco.com.

Forsyth County debuts new fire rescue boat on Lake Lanier

Emergency response on Lake Lanier just got a significant upgrade. The Forsyth County Fire Department unveiled a new fire rescue boat that will allow crews to perform emergency operations directly from the water, improving response times and strategic capabilities across one of Georgia's busiest recreational lakes. The vessel enhances the department's ability to reach boaters, swimmers, and lakeside emergencies more quickly. With warmer months and increased lake traffic on the horizon, the addition positions the county's first responders for a safer 2026 season on Lake Lanier.

Fire safety bill honoring fallen Forsyth firefighter clears Georgia House

A fire safety bill named in memory of fallen Forsyth County firefighter Brant Chesney cleared the Georgia House on Feb. 20 and now heads to the state Senate. House Bill 1086, sponsored by state Rep. Lauren McDonald, honors Chesney and another firefighter who died in the line of duty. The bill aims to strengthen fire safety standards across the state. Its passage through the House marks a meaningful step toward honoring the sacrifice of local first responders while pushing for stronger protections statewide.
