Good morning, Forsyth County.

I had a bit of an odd experience last night. I’m out of town for a trip and staying at a hotel, so I decided to order some food while I caught up on a little work. Steak and potatoes kind of night. The food arrives, and along with it comes the saddest plastic knife ever manufactured. You know the type. Flimsy, dull, and clearly not designed with steak in mind. What followed was a full forearm workout as I slowly sawed my way through dinner.

The worst part? The steak was actually delicious! So every bite became this big moment of anticipation… followed by another minute of wrestling with a utensil that had no business being anywhere near a steak. Sometimes the biggest obstacles in life aren’t the big things. Sometimes it’s just a plastic knife.

Anyway, let’s get into what’s happening around Forsyth County.

Forsyth pastor escapes Israel amid escalating Iran conflict

First Redeemer Church pastor Dr. Jeff Jackson and his wife Catherine are safely home in Forsyth County after a harrowing 48-hour escape from Jerusalem. The couple was visiting the Middle East with a group of pastors when the Iran-Israel conflict escalated, forcing them underground more than a dozen times to shelter from strikes. They eventually fled by bus to the Egyptian border and caught multiple flights home. Pastor Jackson shared the experience from his pulpit Sunday at the Peachtree Parkway church and said he hopes to return once the region stabilizes.

301-Unit Apartment Complex Breaks Ground at Cumming City Center

Construction is officially underway on Overlook, a 301-unit apartment development coming to Cumming City Center. Alpharetta-based Toro Development Co. broke ground March 11, with the first units expected to open next year. The project will replace a vacant lot within the 95-acre mixed-use hub off Canton Highway, putting future residents within walking distance of the shops, restaurants, trails, and green space that have filled out Cumming City Center since its first phase opened in 2022. Planned amenities include a resort-style pool, fitness center, sky lounge, social courtyards, micro offices, and a dog park. TDC is led by Mark Toro, the developer behind Alpharetta's Avalon and the turnaround of Midtown Atlanta's Colony Square. The company says the apartments will help activate foot traffic and support the businesses already in the center.
