Good morning, Forsyth County.
I hope everyone had a wonderful Mother’s Day weekend and found a good way to celebrate the moms, grandmothers, wives, and mother figures who keep families, calendars, carpool lines, snack bags, and entire households moving.
If your weekend plans took you toward Atlanta, you may have caught a break. The much-talked-about I-285 shutdown was called off because of “poor weather.” The bad news is they have simply postponed this closure, so it will likely wind up on another highly inconvenient weekend.
Speaking of Atlanta, we are now officially one month away from the World Cup kicking off. That may sound like a city story, but something that big tends to ripple well beyond the perimeter. Traffic, visitors, restaurants, hotels, watch parties, and general summer energy could all make their way up toward Cumming and Forsyth County in one way or another.
I’ll be keeping an eye out for local watch parties and community gatherings where folks around Forsyth County can get together, enjoy the games, and cheer on Team USA. If you hear of one happening around Cumming, Coal Mountain, Vickery, Halcyon, or anywhere else in the county, send it my way. Big global events are always more fun when there’s a local place to enjoy them.

THE DIGEST
Nighttime Lane Closures Planned on McGinnis Ferry Road
Drivers who use McGinnis Ferry Road may want to plan ahead this week. Forsyth County’s transportation department has announced nighttime lane closures along sections of McGinnis Ferry Road between Brassfield Drive/Seven Oaks and Fawn Lake Drive from May 12 through May 14. The closures are part of ongoing road-widening work in the area. Flagging operations are scheduled to take place each night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m., which could lead to slower travel for anyone passing through the corridor during those hours. County officials are encouraging motorists to use alternate routes when possible and allow extra time if they need to travel through the work zone. The project is another reminder of the continued growth and traffic improvements happening across south Forsyth.
Forsyth County Cricket Player Recognized for Historic Achievement
Forsyth County commissioners recognized local resident Nitish Sudini at their May 7 regular meeting for his accomplishments on the international cricket stage. Sudini represented the United States as a member of the USA Under-19 National Cricket Team during the ICC 2026 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. During the tournament, he reached a major milestone by scoring a century, meaning 100 or more runs in a single innings. According to the county, Sudini became the first player in USA Cricket history, across men’s, women’s and youth national teams, to score a century in an ICC tournament. The Board of Commissioners congratulated Sudini on the historic achievement and thanked him for bringing pride to Forsyth County. For a local athlete, it marks an impressive moment on one of cricket’s biggest international youth stages.
Forsyth County Extends Residential Development Moratorium
Forsyth County leaders have extended a temporary pause on new residential development as the county continues to study the effects of rapid growth. The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously to continue the moratorium for another 180 days, keeping it in place through October. The pause is intended to give county officials more time to evaluate whether roads, water systems, schools and other infrastructure can keep up with continued residential expansion. Forsyth County has seen major population growth over the past several decades, increasing from about 60,000 residents in 1996 to nearly 300,000 today. Since 2010 alone, the county’s population has grown by about 60%. County leaders say the moratorium is temporary, but necessary as they consider how future development should move forward while protecting quality of life for current residents.
