On Monday, I was walking through the backyard when I heard the unmistakable rumble of a school bus making its way through the neighborhood. At least, that is what I thought it was.

A moment later, I realized the sound belonged to the garbage truck, which was already passing my house. My trash can, meanwhile, was still sitting comfortably beside the house, completely full and nowhere near the curb.

There is a very specific kind of defeat that comes from watching the garbage truck continue down the street while realizing you had several chances to put the can out and ignored every one of them. Now comes the challenge of making it through an extra week without creating enough trash to force an emergency trip to the dump. For the next several days, my household will be operating under a strict and entirely accidental waste-reduction program.

So, for anyone in Forsyth County whose trash is picked up on Thursdays or Fridays, let this be your reminder. Roll the can to the curb up, while you are still thinking about it.

Forsyth County has begun construction on a new raw-water intake facility near Tidwell Park, a major infrastructure project designed to give the county a more reliable and independent water supply from Lake Lanier. The system will draw water from about 600 feet offshore and carry it through a roughly 2,000-foot tunnel beneath the lake and county property to a pump station near Pilgrim Mill Road. From there, the water will travel through a three-mile transmission line to the Antioch Water Treatment Plant. Tidwell Park closed August 3 and is expected to remain unavailable for approximately three years while the current phase is completed. When it reopens, planned improvements include a new courtesy dock, resurfaced parking, shoreline stabilization, benches and updated signage. Construction on the full water-intake system is expected to continue in phases through 2031.

Forsyth County student Alekhya Doddapaneni is expanding a youth-led effort that provides nutrition resources to parents and caregivers across Georgia. Doddapaneni founded Nourish Initiatives after years of volunteering showed her how difficult it can be for some families to access basic infant supplies and reliable information. The organization has distributed more than 300 infant nutrition kits through events around the state. Each kit includes items such as baby food, feeding supplies and educational materials intended to help caregivers during early childhood development. Nourish Initiatives also works to connect families with additional health and nutrition resources. The organization is now partnering with the Cumming Women’s Center to distribute kits locally and reach more families in Forsyth County. Doddapaneni plans to continue expanding the initiative’s outreach throughout Georgia. More information is available at nourishinitiatives.org.

Ingram Funeral Home and Crematory is asking residents to help preserve the history of Cumming and Forsyth County by sharing old photographs from the community. The downtown Cumming business, which has served local families since 1928, is collecting images for a project highlighting how the county has changed over nearly a century. Staff members are especially interested in photographs of local landmarks, businesses, roads, gatherings and residents. Contributors are also encouraged to include any available information about the people, places and approximate dates shown. Residents with photographs to share can visit Ingram Funeral Home at 210 Ingram Avenue or contact the business through its social media pages. The collection will help create a broader visual record of Forsyth County’s past for future generations.

Tin Cup Cruise-In
When: Thursday, August 6, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
What: Classic cars will line the main street at Cumming City Center during this free monthly cruise-in. Admission and parking are free for participants and spectators, and no registration is required. Classic-car owners may begin entering through the Canton Road entrance at 5:00 PM, with spaces available on a first-come basis.

BPRC Cumming Run Group
When: Thursday, August 6, 7:00 PM
What: Big Peach Running Co. hosts its weekly Cumming run group for runners and walkers. Participants meet at the fountain before heading out together, with different paces and experience levels welcome.

Trivia Night at Hall & Hound
When: Thursday, August 6, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
What: Gather a team and test your general knowledge during Hall & Hound’s weekly trivia competition. Guests can order food and drinks while competing for the evening’s top score.

Friday Mood: Jazzercise Move & Groove on the Lawn
When: Friday, August 7, 8:30 AM – 9:30 AM
What: Start Friday morning with a free outdoor Jazzercise class combining cardio and strength exercises. The class is open to all fitness levels. Participants should bring water, an exercise mat and handheld weights, with weights between five and 10 pounds recommended.

American Red Cross Blood Drive
When: Friday, August 7, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
What: The American Red Cross will hold a community blood drive at the Cumming Library. Donors can make an appointment through the Red Cross website or by calling 1-800-RED-CROSS. Participants should bring a photo ID and are encouraged to eat an iron-rich meal, drink plenty of fluids and get adequate rest before donating.

Nick & The Knacks at Lou Sobh Amphitheater
When: Friday, August 7, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
What: Nick & The Knacks will perform a high-energy rock tribute influenced by Van Halen, Alice in Chains, Stevie Ray Vaughan and other favorites from the 1980s. Admission and parking are free. Guests may bring lawn chairs or blankets, and friendly leashed dogs are welcome. Outside food, drinks and coolers are not permitted.

Cumming Farmers Market
When: Saturday, August 8, 7:00 AM – 11:00 AM
What: Local vendors will offer fresh produce, meats, eggs, honey, breads, desserts, jams, plants, handmade crafts and other locally produced goods. The market takes place in the Vision Parkway parking lot, which can be reached through the City Center entrance on Canton Highway.

Free Community Shred Event
When: Saturday, August 8, 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM
What: Arseneau Advisory Group is offering residents an opportunity to securely dispose of outdated personal paperwork and documents containing sensitive information. Furkids Sutherlin Dog Shelter Grand Opening
When: Saturday, August 8, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
What: Furkids will celebrate the opening of its Sutherlin Dog Shelter with guided tours, adoptable dogs, refreshments, face painting and giveaways. Radio station 97.1 The River will also be on site with a livestream and opportunities to win concert tickets. The event gives visitors a first look at the organization’s expanded rescue facilities in Forsyth County.

NGQMA Double Header: Points Races 9 and 10
When: Saturday, August 8, qualifying begins at 10:00 AM
What: Young drivers between ages five and 17 will compete in two complete NASCAR Youth Series points races at the North Georgia Quarter Midget Association track. The schedule also includes a Heavy Honda Trophy Race. Open practice runs until 9:00 AM, followed by a drivers meeting and qualifying before the feature races begin.

Nashville Nation at Lou Sobh Amphitheater
When: Saturday, August 8, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
What: Nashville Nation will bring a country music party to the City Center with songs made popular by Luke Combs, Morgan Wallen, Miranda Lambert, Lainey Wilson and other modern country performers. Admission and parking are free. Guests may bring chairs or blankets, and friendly leashed dogs are welcome. Outside food, drinks and coolers are not permitted.

Tribute to Eagles & Friends
When: Saturday, August 8, at 2:30 PM and 7:30 PM
What: GlowBand will perform a tribute to the Eagles and other well-known artists associated with the band’s classic sound, including Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and Bob Seger. The concert features songs from the 1970s through the 1990s, performed by an eight-member band. Tickets are required, and two performances are available.

Slide Into Sundays at City Center
When: Sunday, August 9, 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM
What: Children can spend the afternoon enjoying water slides, bounce houses and games on the lawn at Cumming City Center. Admission is $10 per child, providing access to the day’s inflatable attractions and activities. Families should plan for an outdoor event and bring appropriate clothing for the water features.

Grand Opening and Jewish Family Festival
When: Sunday, August 9, doors open at 1:00 PM; ribbon cutting at 2:00 PM; festival from 3:00 PM – 5:30 PM
What: Congregation Beth Israel will celebrate the opening of its new community space with a ribbon-cutting ceremony followed by a Jewish Family Festival. Admission is free, and the entire community is invited to attend. Advance registration is requested through the event page.

Rockin for a Reason: LANDSLIDE, A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac
When: Friday, August 21, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
What: Landslide will perform Fleetwood Mac favorites during a free outdoor concert supporting Keystone Village, a planned Forsyth County residential community that will provide homes and support for 90 adults with disabilities. Admission and parking are free, and the evening will also include a golf cart raffle. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
