In partnership with

Good morning, Forsyth County.

Ready or not, the World Cup officially starts tonight! I’m honestly curious to see how much we feel it here. Atlanta is one of the host cities, the first local match is Spain vs. Cabo Verde this upcoming Monday, and it will be interesting to see whether the ripple effects make their way up 400. More visitors, more traffic, more people looking for places to eat, and probably at least a few folks underestimating how far Cumming is from Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

And because Georgia has decided to fully remember that it is Georgia, the heat and humidity are back too. We had a nice little stretch where summer felt almost reasonable, but that window appears to be closing. So if you’re heading out to any of the weekend events, bring a water bottle, and dress for the humidity.

THE DIGEST

Forsyth County Expands Role at Five Lake Lanier Parks

Forsyth County is taking on a larger role at Lake Lanier through a new long-term agreement with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The partnership shifts certain maintenance and visitor-service responsibilities to the county at five recreation areas: Tidwell Water Access Point, Vann’s Tavern Water Access Point, Two Mile Creek Day Use Park, Keith’s Bridge Day Use Park and Long Hollow Day Use Park.

County officials say the goal is to improve recreation access, maintenance standards and the overall visitor experience while helping keep the parks open to the public. The county expects usage fees to help offset maintenance costs. The agreement builds on Forsyth County’s existing partnerships with the Corps at other Lake Lanier facilities, including Sawnee Campground, Bald Ridge Campground, Charleston Park, Mary Alice Park, Shady Grove Campground, Six Mile Creek Park and Young Deer Creek Park.

Cumming Library Offering Free Summer Snacks for Kids and Teens

The Cumming Library is helping keep Forsyth County kids and teens fed this summer through a new free snack program running through July 15. Snacks are available to anyone 18 and under on Mondays from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Tuesdays from noon to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 3 to 4 p.m. at the library, located at 585 Dahlonega Street. The program is offered in partnership with Forsyth County Schools Food and Nutrition Department, the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition program and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Snacks are available on a first-come, first-served basis and must be eaten at the library. The effort is meant to help families during the summer months while also connecting kids with library programs and activities.

South Forsyth Grad Helps Georgia Punch Ticket to College World Series

South Forsyth baseball alum Brennan Hudson played a major role in Georgia’s run to the College World Series, helping the Bulldogs reach Omaha for the first time since 2008. Hudson delivered in the Super Regional against Mississippi State, hitting a solo home run in the June 7 clincher before driving in the tying run in the ninth inning. Georgia went on to win 11-9 in extra innings and complete the sweep. Hudson finished the two-game Super Regional 5-for-8 with a walk, four runs scored and two RBIs. His strong weekend followed a big Athens Regional, where he hit three home runs and continued to be one of Georgia’s most dangerous bats. The former South Forsyth standout has 21 home runs, 49 runs scored and 50 RBIs this season as Georgia heads to Omaha looking for its first national championship since 1990.

THANKS!

That’s it for today’s Forsyth Flyer.

One of the funny things about local life is how much happens in plain sight before most people notice it. A storefront starts getting worked on and suddenly everyone is asking the same question: “What’s going in there?”

That’s the kind of stuff we’re trying to keep track of here. So if you see something around Forsyth County that makes you curious, send it my way. A new business, a community event, youth sports registration, a school update, a great local story, or even just a rumor worth checking out.

And if this issue helped you feel a little more in the loop, forward it to someone who lives nearby. Follow Forsyth Flyer on Instagram and Facebook below for more updates between issues.

Have a great weekend!
