TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Forsyth County.

Hope everyone had a great weekend. If your eyes have been feeling a little heavy and itchy lately, you're not imagining things. Pollen season is creeping in early this year, and it doesn't care that you haven't finished your coffee yet. You might not see it on your windshield just yet, but your sinuses already got the memo. Stock up on eye drops and tissues now, it's only going to get worse from here.

But don't let a little pollen slow you down. There's plenty going on around the county this week. Here's what's coming up.

THE DIGEST

County signals end may be near for housing moratorium

Forsyth County could soon ease the residential development freeze enacted nearly a year ago. At a Feb. 19 meeting, Commission Chairman Alfred John said the county has made enough progress on its Unified Development Code overhaul to potentially release two residential zoning categories. The county has added roughly 105,000 residents since 2010, a 66% jump to about 280,000, prompting the moratorium to allow smarter planning. Commissioners authorized public hearings on code changes including zoning time limits, senior housing, and amenity requirements. The current 180-day pause expires in May.

Scholarship fund awards nearly $450,000 to descendants of displaced families

The Forsyth Descendants Scholarship has awarded nearly $450,000 to 25 college students who can trace their lineage to the more than 1,000 Black families violently expelled from Forsyth County in 1912. Created by retired local pastor Durwood Snead and other community leaders, the fund provides up to $10,000 annually per student. Applications for the current cycle are open now through April. A genealogist is available to help applicants confirm their family connection using the 1912 Census. Learn more at forsythscholarship.org.

Alabama and Georgia settle decades-long Lake Lanier water dispute

Progress has been made in the "Tri-State Water Wars," with Alabama and Georgia reaching an agreement to end decades of legal conflict over Lake Lanier's water supply. The resolution, reported Feb. 28, carries major implications for Forsyth County residents who rely on the lake for drinking water and recreation. The dispute dates back to the 1990s and has involved Alabama, Georgia, and Florida fighting over water allocation from the Chattahoochee River system. The settlement brings long-sought stability to the region's water future.
