A proposal could bring 216 new homes to roughly 154 acres along Watson Road in north Forsyth County. The rezoning application, identified as ZA4301, seeks to change the property from A1 agricultural zoning to MRD, or Mixed Residential District, with requested variances. The project is still early in the county review process and has not been approved. Residents will have an opportunity to hear more about the plans and provide feedback during a public participation meeting scheduled for Wednesday, August 19 at 6 p.m. Public participation meetings are part of Forsyth County’s rezoning process before an application moves on to later public hearings. With another sizable residential proposal on the table, the Watson Road property will be one to watch as it works its way through the county process.

Someone who stopped at a Cumming convenience store is now $2 million richer. The Georgia Lottery says a player won the top prize on a $2 Million Dollar Multiplier scratch-off ticket purchased at the Kwik Stop at 2383 Canton Highway. The ticket costs $20, according to local reporting, and the winner claimed the $2 million prize on August 11. The Georgia Lottery announced the win the following day but did not identify the player. Unlike the enormous Powerball jackpot drawing that was attracting attention at the time, this win came from an instant scratch-off ticket purchased right here in Forsyth County. Georgia Lottery proceeds help fund education programs across the state, including the HOPE Scholarship and Georgia Pre-K. Nearly $187,000 is headed to nonprofits and arts programs serving Forsyth County following a joint grant celebration at Denmark Library on August 11. The Forsyth County Community Foundation and Forsyth County Arts Alliance awarded $186,725 through 39 grants supporting projects across the community. Recipients include the Georgia Mountain Food Bank’s Forsyth mobile pantry, the Humane Society of Forsyth County’s veterinary medicine expansion, a mobile planetarium for the Forsyth County Parks Foundation, Forsyth Reads Together, the Penguin Project and local music, dance and theater programs. The awards also marked the Community Foundation’s first local grant cycle. That program was made possible after a $1 million commitment from the North Georgia Community Foundation was matched by philanthropist Tommy Bagwell, creating $2 million in new investment for the foundation’s grant endowment.
