TOGETHER WITH

Good morning, Forsyth County.

If you've been watching the weather forecasts this week, you know we're in for an adventure. A Winter Storm Watch goes into effect Saturday morning, and forecasters are calling for up to four inches of snow and ice through Sunday evening. It's the kind of weather that makes you grateful for a warm home and a fully stocked pantry.

This week's newsletter arrives with an important caveat: many weekend events may be affected by the storm. We've included what's planned, but please check with venues before heading out. Safety first, always. Whether you're planning to brave the elements or stay cozy by the fire, I hope this weekend brings you warmth in every sense. Stock up, stay safe, and look out for your neighbors.

Cards Over Clicks helps children disconnect from their devices and reconnect with the real world. Founded by local Navy veteran Dennis Loewer, this 501(c)(3) non-profit uses the excitement of card collecting to develop critical social and learning skills.

From Pokémon and Sports to Disney and Star Wars, every free card packet comes with a grade-specific educational worksheet tailored to Georgia standards. Whether for Pre-K or High School, these packs encourage students to achieve classroom goals and engage with their peers face-to-face.

They help educators and parents turn "social media timeouts" into fun, educational wins. Their mission is simple: inspire kids to put the phone down and learn through family-friendly collecting.

Ready to inspire your students or support the community? They are actively seeking teachers to challenge their classes, educators to help design worksheets, and local business sponsors to keep the packs free.

THE DIGEST

Central EMS takes over emergency medical services for county

Forsyth County residents are now being served by a new emergency medical provider following the transition to Central Emergency Medical Services on January 14. The change comes after Advanced Ambulance Service, which served the county since 2008, assigned its contract to Central EMS. Commission Chairman R.J. (Pete) Amos assured residents there will be "absolutely no interruption" to services, with seven fully staffed ambulances continuing to respond to 911 calls throughout the county. The Board of Commissioners approved the contract assignment at a special meeting January 13.

Polo Fields Park master plan released for public feedback

Forsyth County Parks & Recreation has unveiled a draft master plan for Polo Fields Park, inviting residents to weigh in on proposed improvements to the 6050 Majors Road facility. The plan follows a public input meeting on January 14 where community members expressed enthusiasm for the park's future. Residents can review the draft and submit feedback through the Parks & Recreation website. The master plan is part of the department's broader effort to update its 10-year plan through community engagement. Visit forsythco.com/parks for details and to share your input.

Tom McDonald receives Key to the City of Cumming

The Cumming City Council honored Thomas "Tom" B. McDonald with a Key to the City during its meeting on Tuesday, January 20. McDonald, a longtime Bible study leader, was recognized for his years of service and positive impact on the community. The Key to the City is one of the highest honors a municipality can bestow, traditionally given to individuals who have made significant contributions to the community. McDonald's recognition highlights the role faith-based community leaders play in shaping Forsyth County.
