Good morning, Forsyth County.

We are finally inching toward what I would consider swimmable water temperatures. Not quite “jump in without thinking” warm, but close enough that the brave among us may soon begin that great Southern summer tradition of stepping into the pool one inch at a time while loudly insisting, “It’s not bad once you get used to it.”

Of course, “getting used to it” usually means standing there with your shoulders up by your ears, pretending you’re comfortable while every child within a 50-foot radius cannonballs in like they were born in Lake Lanier.

So consider this your early-season reminder: try on the swimsuit before the first pool invite, make sure the goggles still have both straps, check whether the pool floats survived their long winter hibernation in the garage, and maybe take a look at the sunscreen before discovering it expired sometime during the Bush administration.

Matt Schoolhouse Reopens as Community Building After Major Renovation

Forsyth County celebrated the reopening of the historic Matt Schoolhouse Community Building on Tuesday, May 12, following a large-scale renovation project in northwest Forsyth. The building, located at 5710 Namon Wallace Road, was originally built in the 1940s and once served about 75 local students. Forsyth County purchased the 8,100-square-foot schoolhouse in 2021 and later completed safety improvements, including asbestos and mold abatement. Renovations began in 2025 to transform the former school into a new community facility. The renovated building will now serve several purposes, including programming space for Parks & Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation division, offices for Recycling & Solid Waste staff, a future voting precinct, and meeting and event space for the community. Improvements include updated gathering spaces, a new roof, modern bathrooms, a kitchen, and new office areas. The renovation project cost approximately $2.6 million and was funded through Capital Outlay.
