Good morning, Forsyth County.

My house has no shortage of phone chargers. They are in drawers, behind furniture, and stuffed into bags. Yet the moment my battery turns red, every useful charger disappears. The one beside me is too short to reach the outlet. Another fits the phone perfectly but charges it so slowly that the battery percentage seems to be moving backward out of spite. There is also one particularly good charger that everyone uses and nobody has ever touched. Ask where it went, and the entire house suddenly becomes a room full of innocent witnesses.

We were promised technology would make life simpler. Instead, I now have a collection of nearly identical cords and must examine each one like an archaeologist identifying fragments from a lost civilization. While my phone still has battery, let’s take a look at what is happening around Forsyth County this week.

The City of Cumming is adding 27 security cameras to the main office of its Recreation and Parks Department after the City Council unanimously approved the project. The system will include seven exterior cameras, 17 inside the building and three covering the outdoor playground. City officials said the added surveillance will improve safety at one of Cumming’s busiest public facilities. The building is also home to the Cumming Event Center and regularly hosts dance, art and aerobics classes, summer camps and other community programs. The steady flow of visitors throughout the day made the location a priority for upgraded security. The city accepted the lowest of three bids for the installation. The project will cost $2,654.

Sawnee Mountain Preserve could soon add a portable planetarium to its growing lineup of educational programs. Forsyth County commissioners gave tentative approval July 28 to accept the high-definition inflatable system from the nonprofit Forsyth County Parks Foundation. The planetarium would allow students and other visitors to explore astronomy through projected programs inside a dome-like structure. County officials believe the addition could strengthen field trips and organized learning opportunities at the centrally located preserve. Sawnee Mountain already offers a visitor center, interpretive exhibits, adventure activities and more than 11 miles of hiking trails across over 820 acres. Additional improvements are also planned. Barker Overlook is expected to open this year, while the foundation is exploring an all-terrain mobility device to make more of the preserve accessible to visitors with limited mobility.

A Forsyth County-founded nonprofit is helping adults with special needs continue learning and building friendships after leaving the school system. EduBud Community Center in Suwanee serves adults 18 and older with developmental or intellectual disabilities, autism and Down syndrome. Its programs focus on practical life skills, communication, social development, technology, fitness and creative activities such as art and music. The center was developed by Clara Lim, who founded EduBud International in 2022. Her goal was to address the loss of structured learning and social opportunities many people experience after aging out of school-based services. EduBud also organizes community outings and hands-on activities, including pottery painting. The nonprofit is currently seeking volunteers interested in helping with individual events or making a regular commitment.

Monday Mood: Yoga on the Green
When: Monday, August 3, 6:00 PM – 7:00 PM
What: The Heart Studio is leading a free outdoor yoga class for participants of all experience levels. The session concludes with meditation. Bring a yoga mat and water, and check the studio’s social media pages for weather-related changes.

Twisted Trivia at Cherry Street Brewpub
When: Monday, August 3, 7:30 PM
What: Cherry Street Brewpub hosts its weekly Twisted Trivia game inside the Brewhouse. The event is for guests age 21 and older. Teams should call the brewery in advance to reserve a table.

Storytime with Forsyth County Public Library
When: Tuesday, August 4, 11:00 AM – 12:00 PM
What: Forsyth County Public Library is bringing stories, music and an energetic puppet show to the amphitheater. The program is free, family-friendly and open to children and caregivers of all ages.

Singles Social Tuesdays
When: Tuesday, August 4, 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM
What: Cumming City Center’s weekly singles gathering is meeting at Santa Maria. The casual social is open to adults of all ages who want to meet new people, share a meal and spend an evening out.

Music Bingo at Hall & Hound
When: Wednesday, August 5, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM
What: Players will mark their bingo cards as songs are played instead of listening for traditional numbers. The weekly game is free to enter, with prizes awarded during each round.

Open Mic Night at Cherry Street Brewing
When: Wednesday, August 5, 7:00 PM – 10:00 PM
What: Local musicians and performers can take the microphone during Cherry Street Brewing’s weekly open mic night. The event takes place in the taproom, which is limited to guests age 21 and older.

Tin Cup Cruise-In
When: Thursday, August 6, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM
What: Classic cars will line the main street at Cumming City Center during this free monthly cruise-in. Admission and parking are free for participants and spectators, and no registration is required. Classic-car owners may begin entering through the Canton Road entrance at 5:00 PM, with spaces available on a first-come basis.

BPRC Cumming Run Group
When: Thursday, August 6, 7:00 PM
What: Big Peach Running Co. hosts its weekly Cumming run group for runners and walkers. Participants meet at the fountain before heading out together, with different paces and experience levels welcome.

Tribute to Eagles & Friends

What: GlowBand will perform a tribute to the Eagles and other well-known artists associated with the band’s classic sound, including Jackson Browne, Linda Ronstadt and Bob Seger. The concert features songs from the 1970s through the 1990s, performed by an eight-member band. Tickets are required, and two performances are available.

Rockin for a Reason: LANDSLIDE, A Tribute to Fleetwood Mac
When: Friday, August 21, 8:00 PM – 10:00 PM
What: Landslide will perform Fleetwood Mac favorites during a free outdoor concert supporting Keystone Village, a planned Forsyth County residential community that will provide homes and support for 90 adults with disabilities. Admission and parking are free, and the evening will also include a golf cart raffle. Bring a lawn chair or blanket.
