Good morning, Forsyth County.
Before Memorial Day became the unofficial start of summer, it began as something much quieter and more solemn. In the years after the Civil War, communities across the country started gathering to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, flags, and prayers. It became widely known as Decoration Day, a simple name for a meaningful act of remembrance.
Over time, that tradition grew into the Memorial Day we know today, a national day set aside to honor the men and women who gave their lives while serving in the United States military. So while this weekend may bring cookouts and a little extra time with family, it is also worth pausing for the reason behind the long weekend. Some holidays are about celebration. This one asks us to remember.

THE DIGEST
Forsyth County Continues Pause on Older Residential Developments
Forsyth County will keep its pause on certain older residential developments in place for up to six more months after commissioners unanimously approved an extension May 21. The moratorium applies only to residential properties rezoned before April 13, 2017, that have not yet moved forward with development. It affects residential sketch plat applications and land disturbance permits tied to those older zonings. County officials said the additional time will allow them to finish updates related to the Unified Development Code and tree ordinance. Properties rezoned after April 13, 2017, are not affected, and eligible property owners can still apply for permits. The new expiration date is Nov. 17, 2026, though commissioners can lift the pause earlier.
Student Wins National Writing Competition
Covenant Christian Academy junior Raiye-Jean Lane earned first place in expository writing at the 48th annual American Association of Christian Schools National Competition. The event was held in April at Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina, and drew more than 1,900 students from Christian high schools nationwide. Students competed in many different categories, including Bible, music, speech, art and academics, after advancing from state-level contests. Lane’s win brought national recognition to Covenant Christian Academy and highlighted his strength as a writer. School leaders praised the 17-year-old for his preparation, perseverance and achievement against top students from across the country.
Legends Distillery Seeks Bankruptcy Protection While Staying Open
Legends Distillery in Cumming has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection as its owner, Spirits of the USA LLC, works to reorganize the business. The company, founded in 2007 by Michael Gerard, opened its distillery on Industrial Park Drive in 2020 and later added a tasting room and VIP lounge. Court filings show the business is carrying more debt than assets, with obligations tied to rent, credit cards and trade vendors. The filing comes after several challenging years for the craft beverage industry and declining revenue for the company. Despite the bankruptcy case, Legends Distillery remains open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The distillery has previously earned awards for its vodka and bourbon, and the company says it plans to use the reorganization process to stabilize operations and protect its brands.
CIVIL NEWS
Monday is Memorial Day, observed by the county on May 25, so there is not a public board meeting starting the week.
The calendar picks up Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM with the Forsyth County Board of Voter Registrations & Elections certification meeting at the Voter Registrations & Elections Office, 1201 Sawnee Drive in Cumming. The board is set to certify the May 19 General Primary and Nonpartisan General Election, with agenda items covering voter turnout, UOCAVA ballots, provisional ballots, accepted ballots and final certification of official results.
At 2:00 PM, the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners convenes for its work session. Work sessions are where commissioners move through county business in detail ahead of formal action, and the county’s 2026 schedule lists May 26 as a work-session date. One issue to watch is TSPLOST, after commissioners agreed May 12 to bring back discussion of a possible special called meeting with the City of Cumming on that subject.
The day closes at 5:00 PM with a Forsyth County Schools called meeting listed from 5:00 to 6:00 PM on the district calendar. The school system says Board of Education meetings are held at the BOE/Professional Development Center at 1120 Dahlonega Highway unless otherwise noted, so it’s worth checking the posted agenda for any last-minute room or agenda details.
